When people think of ancient civilizations they typically think of primitive peoples incapable of understanding advanced mechanical devices and concepts. This is especially true of civilizations which existed nearly 2000 years ago.

However, recent discoveries made in the last 150 years have put these theories to rest. In the year 1900, archaeologist Spyridon Stais discovered a small device found in an ancient shipwreck off the coast of the Greek Island of Antikythera, which is near Crete.

This devices has come to be known as the Antikythera Mechanism. Despite its great discovery, little about it has been reported in the press, and college history instructors rarely mention it. The device is the oldest known gearing mechanism in existence.

It is made from bronze and sits in a wood frame. The device uses what is called a differential gear, a gear that was not believed to exist until the 16th century. This device has astounded both scientists and historians alike. The most prevailing theory is that the device is a type of analog computer.

Many experts believed that while the Greeks had the theoretical skills necessary to build such a device, they did not have the practical means of doing so.

The discovery of this device forces both scientists and historians to accept the fact that so called primitve peoples were hundreds of years ahead of their time. The very idea that an analog computer could be been designed by an ancient civilization destroys many of the teachings prevalent in colleges today.

The device was capable of modeling the orbits of Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter. This requires an advanced understanding of mechanics and astronomy.

Experts around the world all agree that the discovery of this mechanism demonstrates that our history is largely incomplete. Add this to the ancient Sumerians, and other mysterious objects, it is clear that our view of history maybe completely backward.

It is time for mankind to realize that there is a large part of our history that we are missing, and only time will tell what this is.
